Separate Grounding From Tool Actions
Use search only for current facts; keep draft creation behind application logic and human approval.
Today's Goals
- Decide when Google Search grounding is needed.
- Check whether a citation supports its claim.
- Explain the boundary between a function request, app execution, and approval.
The Northstar tickets and policy excerpt usually provide enough information for routing. Occasionally a support lead asks a separate question about a current external requirement. That is a research task with a different evidence boundary. Today you will keep research and actions separate.
Plain-Language Walkthrough
Search only for a question that needs the outside world
A ticket saying “my clasp is cracked” does not require web search to detect damage. Searching for product policies can introduce irrelevant or outdated pages. By contrast, a question about a current carrier service advisory or a government rule may require a current source. Write the exact claim to verify, the date it matters, and the authoritative source you expect. Keep internal policy in the organization's verified policy document; public search cannot replace an internal decision.
The Google Search grounding guide explains how the Gemini API can use search and return grounding metadata. That capability can help discover current sources, but a citation is not a proof stamp. Open the cited page, check its publication or update date, and confirm the cited portion supports the specific sentence. A source about a carrier's domestic service cannot support a conclusion about international delivery. If a source is ambiguous, record a narrower claim or leave the question unresolved.
Use a claim-to-source table with four columns: claim, source, supported wording, and remaining gap. Do not put one link at the end of a paragraph that contains five different claims. When sources conflict, show the conflict and the time each applies. The goal is a reviewable research note, not a model's best-sounding synthesis.
