Use Files and Images as Traceable Inputs
Compare text, screenshot, and document inputs while tracing supported and inferred claims.
Today's Goals
- Record each attachment's source, date, and permitted use.
- Separate visible content from inference in model output.
- Escalate ambiguous screenshots and incomplete documents.
A customer message may arrive with a photo of a damaged box or a page from a policy document. That makes the classification richer, but it also creates a new trap: the model can describe what it sees and then slip into a confident story about why it happened. Today's work treats each attachment as a source with limits.
Plain-Language Walkthrough
Give every input a source card
Keep the fictional Northstar tickets from D1. Add one invented screenshot description showing a broken clasp and one short invented policy excerpt about when a refund request should be reviewed. Label both clearly as training fixtures. For each attachment, write a source card: ID, who supplied it, when it was created, what it contains, what it does not establish, and whether it may be uploaded. A screenshot can show that a clasp appears broken; it cannot prove whether the clasp broke in shipping, during use, or before packing. A policy excerpt can describe a current rule only if its date and version are known.
The Gemini Files API guide describes supported media and file handling for API work. AI Studio may offer file upload in its interface, but do not assume the interface and API have identical controls. Use the current UI for the exercise, and record whether you entered text, attached a file, or supplied a screenshot. If an attachment cannot be uploaded in your setting, use a faithful text description and mark that the image interpretation itself was not tested. Do not claim multimodal verification from a text-only run.
