Audit and Hand Off a Reviewable Research Package
Combine provenance, citation checks, conflicts, outputs, and permissions into a package another researcher can review independently.
Today's Goals
- Build a complete audit path from conclusion back to source.
- Test whether a new owner can reproduce key judgments.
- Document how to handle source updates, permission changes, and withdrawal.
The final day is a handoff test, not a celebration of a tidy notebook. The fictional shade pilot has a source register, claim audit, conflict matrix, and two reviewed outputs. A new owner should be able to challenge and update the work without asking the original analyst what they meant. Gemini Notebook can help explore the materials, but the authoritative handoff is the package of source identities, permissions, judgments, and review history. The lab is offline and fictional; no live product output is claimed.
Plain-Language Walkthrough
Define the unit of handoff
A link to a notebook is a location, not a handoff. The receiver needs to know the research question, decision owner, source set version, access scope, material claims, conflicts, unknowns, approved outputs, and next review date. Think of a museum handing over an exhibit: visitors see a narrative, while curators need the catalog, provenance, loan conditions, and corrections log. If those records are missing, a beautiful exhibit cannot be maintained responsibly. Your brief is the visitor-facing narrative; the research package is the curatorial record.
Make an index before writing prose. One row names each artifact: D1 source register, D2 claim ledger, D3 conflict matrix, D4 briefing and study guide, and D5 review log. Give each a version, owner, date, location, and access class. The index points to the item but does not replace it. A new analyst should know which records are approved for external distribution and which contain restricted RIDER-02 notes. If the notebook itself is shared, record exactly which roles have access and which source versions are present at the time of sharing.
Every material conclusion needs a chain: final sentence, claim ID, accepted or conditional status, source ID and version, exact passage or table, reviewer decision, and distribution artifact. Try following the chain backward from “C needs a comparable reading.” It should lead to the absence of C in CITY-01 and to the D2 review that rejected a three-stop claim. Follow the chain forward from CITY-05's 31 percent. It should lead to the D3 unresolved scope difference and to a briefing sentence that preserves the condition. A chain that stops at “AI summary” is broken.
