Call an HTTP API and Protect Credentials
Use HTTP Request to understand requests, responses, timeouts, and credential boundaries with safe sample data.
Today's Goals
- Read HTTP Request inputs and responses.
- Keep secrets in credentials rather than workflow text.
- Distinguish network, auth, and invalid-data failures.
Many automations connect services through an API. The HTTP Request node is the general-purpose connector when a dedicated integration is unavailable or unsuitable. A successful call must satisfy more than “the server responded.” Today you will design a read-only ticket lookup using fictional responses.
Plain-Language Walkthrough
Write the request contract before configuring the node
A request contract names the method, destination, authentication, allowed input, expected response, timeout, and side effect. For this exercise, the method is GET, the path conceptually asks for ticket NM-101, and the response should include the ticket ID, message text, language, and update time. Use a mock response or an approved training endpoint. Do not paste a production support URL or customer record into the course exercise. The HTTP Request node reference describes current options; follow your installed version's labels.
The URL comes from trusted configuration, not directly from arbitrary ticket text. If a ticket contains a URL, do not hand it to an HTTP node as the next destination. That would let untrusted content select where the workflow sends its request. The ticket ID may be used as a path parameter only after checking its format and encoding it safely. In this course, define an ID pattern and reject values outside it before any request.
